Lisa Capra celebrates her 34th year in public education, with the past 25 working specifically to better meet the needs of second language learners through Two-Way Immersion programs. As Dual Language Manager for Palm Beach County School District, Lisa has effectively
supported administrators, teachers, parents and students in the dual language programs she oversees and has shared this knowledge on a national level through conferences, webinars, and statewide conference calls.
Sonia Leañez Birch, a Venezuelan native educator with over 30 years of experience,
currently serves as the Dual Language Instructional Planner for Florida's School District of Palm
Beach County. A strong advocate for multilingual learners and bilingual education, she has
collaborated closely with district and school leaders in the development and implementation of
language acquisition programs, appropriate resources and effective practices that promote
academic excellence and growth for all students.
Description: In this session we will share our collaborative work on problem solving for
English Language Learners in a large urban district with over 30,000 multilingual learners. Our
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) takes into consideration the students’ linguistic
profile along with multiple sources of data, emphasizing the importance of culture and
language as we achieve the ultimate goal of student’s success.
